I believe there is hardly anyone who has not watched or did not enjoy the Back to the Future film series. When it comes to the “history of global grocery retailing,” I often liken Clarence Saunders, a highly significant figure who was born in the United States on August 9, 1881, to “Marty McFly,” the unforgettable character portrayed by the legendary actor Michael J. Fox in that beloved series. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, grocery stores looked very different from their present-day appearance; their interiors and operating methods resembled more “large pharmacies” than the modern supermarkets we know today.
